- Attendance Policy
Read Carefully
- A sense of class community requires members to be present and active. Therefore, attendance is an important part of this course. By maintaining a good attendance you will demonstrate commitment to your studies and commitment to your classmates. You will also learn more in the course and you will get a better grade for participation.
- Being absent from more than 5 classes, or being late 10 times (two times late = 1 absence), or a combination of the two will result in an AUTOMATIC "F". There are no exceptions.
- Missing both the Midterm and the Final will be an automatic "F".
- Being absent often, not doing assignments, missing exams and quizzes and not participating will result in an AUTOMATIC "F".
- A+ is for an absolutely outstanding student who has excellent attendance, participates actively, asking and answering many questions, has a very positive attitude, and does extremely well on exams. Attendance is mandatory!

Job Interview Related Absence: Seniors who are doing job interviews are still required to attend class. If you expect to be absent often for job interviewing, you should seriously consider whether or not this class is best for you. Job interviews may excuse you from the attendance policy, but excessive absence could lead to a lower grade. If, for example, two students are competing for an "A" in the course and both have similar test scores, the one with the attendance policy will get the "A" in the course. In other words, it will be difficult to get an "A" in the course if you miss many classes due to job interviews. One or possibly two job interview related absences will not hurt your chances of getting an "A." But more than that could.
Job Related Absence: If you are a senior and can no longer attend class due to finding a job, YOU MUST CONTACT the instructor as soon as possible. Arrangements can be made for alternative studies, assignments and so on. However, you must discuss the situation with the instructor at least 5 weeks prior to the end of the semester. The earlier, the better.
Military Service Related Absence: All men who miss class due to military related requirements will be excused from their absence. However, an official stamped document must be presented prior to the end of the semester, and as early as possible.
Menstruation Related Absence: Women are excused from absence due to menstruation related difficulties. However, be aware that this could have an impact on your participation grade. Attending class if it is not too difficult is always the better option. Please be aware, that it IS your right to miss class due to excessive difficulty due to menstruation. However, this policy is expected to accommodate those who have more than normal difficulties.
Sickness Related Absence: Normal sickness such as mild colds, headaches, hangovers or allergies are not excused absences. Absence due to illness is only excused for extreme cases. Please be aware of this policy. If you wish to submit a health related absence you are required to present a doctors note, NOT a medicine prescription form.
Death Related Absence: Absence related to a death of a family member is excusable, though very unfortunate. If this were to occur, please contact your instructor as conveniently as possible. Text message or email are fine. Documentation may be required only if the death coincides with a major exam or project due date.
